ReadingPals matches passionate, committed, trained volunteers with pairs of four-year-olds to help them get ready for kindergarten. Not only do ReadingPals help improve children’s literacy and language skills, we provide the individual attention many children need to thrive.
ReadingPals work with pairs of children once a week from September through May. Volunteers commit 1-hour a week to visiting students in pre-kindergarten classrooms to share books, engage in conversation and play skill building games. ReadingPals utilize the Skills-based Educational Experiences Delivery System [SEEDS] developed by Florida Institute of Education. Books, materials, training and placement at a participating ReadingPals center/school are all provided.
United Way, under the guidance of our Women in Local Leadership [WILL], is recruiting 200 volunteers for the 2013-2014 school year. ReadingPals will be paired with pre-kindergarten students at United Way’s Success by 6, Duval County Public School, Early Learning Coalition of Duval and privately owned early learning centers in Clay, Duval and Nassau counties. You do not need to be a WILL member, or a woman, to volunteer.
ReadingPals is an initiative of United Way of Northeast Florida generously funded by Carol and Barney Barnett. Community impact partners for this initiative include Duval County Public Schools, Early Learning Coalition of Duval, Jacksonville Children’s Commission, Jacksonville Public Library and Children’s Movement of Florida.
