United Way Pays Tribute to Leaders of Today

United Way of Northeast Florida recognized leadership givers on Thursday, May 1 at the Casa Marina Hotel in Jacksonville Beach. More than 250 leadership givers were in attendance at United Way’s annual Celebrate Leadership event.

“This celebration gave us the opportunity to thank all of United Way’s leadership contributors and those companies and organizations that had outstanding Leadership campaigns,” said Ron Autrey, 2007 Campaign Chair. “Leadership Circle gifts represented more than 60 percent of the total employee campaign. This is the fastest growing area of giving throughout all United Way’s and especially United Way of Northeast Florida.”

With an annual gift of $1,000 to $9,999, members of the Leadership Circle recognize the many needs in the community and are committed to strengthening United Way’s ability to meet those needs.

“Members of the Leadership Circle contribute to helping change the lives of individuals on the First Coast,” said Connie Hodges, president of United Way of Northeast Florida. “I want to personally thank every giver for believing in United Way and what we are doing for the community.”

Many companies and organizations were honored for having Leadership contributors. Jaime Shelton, 2007 Leadership Giving Chair and Marty Lanahan, 2008 Campaign Chair announced and presented the awards.

The evening began with the award for Outstanding Small Business Leadership Award, presented to Itel, Inc., for their 70 percent increase in leadership giving

Four companies had outstanding results in the number of Leadership Contributors. Baptist Health demonstrated leadership throughout Northeast Florida and has 225 Leadership contributors. They received the “Outstanding Number of Leadership Donors” award. VyStar Credit Union received the Outstanding Increase in Leadership Donors award. They increased the number of new leadership donors to 61, for a total of 161 leadership contributors. The “Outstanding Percent Increase in Leadership Donors was received by two companies. The Jacksonville Bank and State Farm Insurance Company both had outstanding leadership support and saw an overall increase in company participation.

Four awards were given to companies who had outstanding results in total Leadership dollars. Miller Electric Company was honored for their efforts in raising $59,582 new leadership dollars and received the “Outstanding Increase in Leadership Giving” award. Earl Industries, LLC received the “Outstanding Percent Increase in Leadership Giving” award for their increased leadership contributions of 109 percent. The “Outstanding Leadership Giving Per Capita” award was given to Presser, Lahnen and Edelman.

The Tocqueville Society Award celebrates the success of a company who had an outstanding increase in Tocqueville donors, individuals giving at $10,000 and above. CSX received this honor for their increase of 11 new members, bringing the total number of Tocqueville members for their company to 45.

The Leadership Giving Chair’s Award is designed to recognize one company that ran an impressive leadership campaign, incorporating all of the best practices for running a successful campaign. Publix Super Markets was presented this award for emphasizing leadership giving. They had a 17 percent increase in leadership contributions and 30 percent increase in leadership donors.

The awards ceremony concluded with the presentation of the “Overall Excellence in the 2007 Leadership Campaign” award. With 610 leadership donors, 6 new Tocqueville members and 79 percent of their campaign coming from Leadership giving, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida received the final award of the evening.

In addition to the company and organization awards, the Leaders in Giving Celebration marked Marty Lanahan’s first formal opportunity to speak as the 2008 United Way Campaign Chair.
